My mom and I have a phrase we use to encourage each other. We say, “Remember Moses.” It’s a reminder that when we’re at the end of our rope and there’s nothing else that we can do, the only option left is to trust God to part the water. Moses’ example has been incredibly encouraging to me, and I hope these thoughts will encourage you, as well.
Let’s consider Moses’ story (Exodus 14-15). Right from the very beginning, we see God’s ultimate purpose: “and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, and the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD.” (v4) God’s purpose through everything in the next 2 chapters was to bring glory to Himself! Isn’t it encouraging knowing that that is His plan in our lives, too? Everything that happens to us or through us is Soli Deo Gloria!
So the first Passover had just finished and the Israelites were running for their lives; Egypt was in an uprising because thousands had just been killed by the Death Angel; Pharaoh decided to send an army after his slaves he had just freed; and now there was a massive sea in the Israelites’ way. What must the Israelites have been thinking? God, YOU told us to leave Egypt, YOU told us to go this way, YOU told us that we’d be fine!! Talk about a PR crisis for Moses. So what was wrong? Had they miscalculated? Did God hate them? No. God was just carrying out His perfect plan His perfect way.
The Israelites did what most of us, if we’re honest, would have done. They panicked. They picked the easiest person to lay the blame on, Moses. Look at their drastic complaints. “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” (Vv11-12) Moses, why did you save our lives, huh?? But what did Moses say? (I love this, by the way)
FEAR NOT
STAND FIRM
STOP TALKING
WATCH GOD WORK
How perfect! Verse 14 is my favorite!
“The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”
What did God say?? It’s even better!! (Verse 15) “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward!” In essence, “C’mon, what are you waiting for? Let’s go! I know what I’m doing – will you just Trust Me!?” God said “I will get glory over Pharaoh and his entire host, his chariots, and his horsemen. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.”
God had taken them to the end of what they could do. I don’t know about you, but it would be pretty hard for me to look out to Lake Erie, and just step in and start walking to Canada. (Might save on travel expenses, though) Moses had lead his people in obedience to God up until now and there was nothing else that they could do, nowhere that they could go. They were backed into a corner and the only way out was through the water.
